Last week on Grey’s Anatomy, Derek Shepherd stepped into the spotlight, saving a co-worker’s legs and life. This week, Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) steps into it, testing her ethics while trying to save a patient — a 10-year-old whose parents have millions to donate to the hospital. Could Arizona bring Seattle Grace out of economic turmoil? Capshaw tells TVGuide.com about the challenges her character will face, the upcoming speed bumps for Arizona and Callie (Sara Ramirez) and the possibility for wedding bells at Seattle Grace…
TVGuide.com: What can you tell us about the Arizona-centric episode?
I have a patient who I fight very hard for. Everybody feels strongly about it and it’s a very high-stakes episode. It’s life or death. The episode speaks to the whole idea that money runs a hospital. The chief [James Pickens Jr.] is having a hard time figuring out how to make the hospital ascend the ranks of the numbers game, [and] money helps make that happen. Arizona’s case happens to be with a set of parents who have the ability to give or not give in a very consequential way.
TVGuide.com: Arizona seems to have a pretty straight moral compass. How will she feel in making these decisions based on money?
Yeah, she’s a little perfect that way [Laughs]. This episode has all of that in mind, but at the same time, we are all only human and we can all only ever do the best that we can. Sometimes the best we can, in her case, leaves her a little more vulnerable to the elements and to the story and what’s happening. She has to make choices that are very hard as a surgeon, but also as a pre-eminent doctor in a hospital that is part of the reason that people are giving money or not giving money.
TVGuide.com: This episode also features Arizona’s birthday.
She has a birthday and very in line with Arizona’s character, who is not about herself and just very clear about who she is, she’s not the one to be asking for balloons and candles. She thinks it’s a day like any other day. There is a party, but it’s not one that she knows about. Given that in this particular episode we’ve centered on her professional and personal life, the two definitely crossover. She doesn’t have the typical reaction to someone going out of their way to throw them a big party.
TVGuide.com: What’s in store for the future of Callie and Arizona’s relationship?
This season has been about cementing a very mature and grounded relationship and taking it forward. This is a drama, of course; there will be conflict, but for the time being, they’re enjoying being in a relationship that seems stable.
TVGuide.com: We have not seen Callie and Arizona get intimate this season. Sara Ramirez said they probably are. What’s your take on that?
Definitely, of course it’s happening. They’re in a committed relationship. It’s like the beginnings of any relationship, but I think they’re very much together and all of that is happening. I’m sure that we’ll have our time.
TVGuide.com: Callie has vacillated about her sexuality. Could that be an issue that comes up?
There’s definitely ample opportunity for that to happen. Obviously the halls of Seattle Grace have been well known for missteps. These are doctors, they’re in intense situations and their personal lives follow suit. They make mistakes. They kiss the wrong people, they sleep with the wrong people, they sleep with the right people, they kiss the right people. We get to see how things unfold and if there’s forgiveness. Callie could find another guy or girl. Her playing field is vast.
TVGuide.com: Will Sloane (Eric Dane) and Arizona butt heads because they’ve slept with the same woman?
In a way it’s implied that they might. Whenever there’s been a chance to play that I am intimidated by him or being standoffish, I’ve always chosen to make it very playful. It’s much more Arizona’s style to find it very amusing.
TVGuide.com: Could there be wedding bells for Callie and Arizona?
There’s probably a lot more stuff that has to happen before that happens. Listen, being that I’ve been married for five years now and I’ve been with my husband for nearly eight, you have to make sure you’re with the right person and you need the groundwork to be laid. I don’t think they’re going to get married just to get married. As Arizona goes, I think she has incredible discipline and she does, as you said, have a very strict moral compass and marriage would not be something she would jump into without giving it a great amount of thought.
TVGuide.com: Arizona refers to her family a lot. Will we meet her dad?
I hope that we do. They’ve certainly set it up that we could and it would be a great opportunity to take advantage of.
TVGuide.com: Arizona has been much less fazed by the merger. Is she just superconfident?
It’s sort of funny, she never thinks she’s wrong and you don’t hate her for it. There’s no ego though, she just always thinks she’s right and she is. Cristina wanted to get on my service because no one was going to let go of the person that saves babies, so maybe that’s part of it. In Thursday’s episode, it will be revealed whether or not she’s worth her weight in gold and how important she is.

The big reveal of the episode last week on Grey’s Anatomy was that Izzie was fired (by way of a script, no less, from a bitchy HR person who bossed the chief of surgery around). We all know prior that she did ask for something like a five-week break from Grey’s for a movie and new baby Naleigh so sooner or later, her character Izzie Stevens would somehow take some time off herself.
How did Shonda and the other Grey’s people execute this little timeout? They made Izzie kill (sort of) a patient awaiting kidney transplant partly because of the pressure of Mercy West competition and partly because she was still reeling from some harsh things, namely George’s death and cancer. The question that begs asking now is this: how will they get Izzie to go back now? A corollary would be: where did she go and what did Alex do to deserve a little note telling him she left?
Justin Chambers, as Karev, did an amazing job reporting the bad news to Mer and Cristina (to hug or not to hug). And it’s true that the chief did mention that Karev was one of the people who questioned Izzie’s stamina in terms of her work. That being said, however, is there a possible way to get Izzie Stevens back to the program of Seattle Grace without sacrificing authenticity? Sure, they can snap and say “Recession over!” and hire back the people they fired, but will Grey’s Anatomy fans just as easily bite into that quickie plot fix as they did (or didn’t) her cancer-justifying-Denny-ghost-sex storyline?
One thing’s for sure. Izzie’s character has become the hotbed of insanity on Grey’s Anatomy. She was introduced as the perky, optimistic side to contrast with the dark and gloomy Meredith and Cristina. With all the harsh things that happened to her, she has grown less perky over the seasons - although she did show that naïve side, trusting one of the Mercy West newbies with the key code - and last week she reached a breaking point. Without so much as a hey, she left Karev a note saying that she’s gone, no frills and whatever’s, she’s just gone.
Or will Izzie be back at all?

October 15 is the day the Seattle Grace and Mercy West hospital staffs merge in a tense episode titled “Invasion.” Word is Izzie and Lexie’s heads are on the chopping block.
Dr. Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) “He’s a very confident, competitive, fearless leader and a bit of a cocky, hotshot surgeon,” says Jesse. “He’s cracking jokes left and right and going in there and taking no prisoners. So far, I’ve had a spat with Cristina and shared scenes with Owen, Lexie and Derek.”

Dr. Reed Adamson (Nora Zehetner) “She’s very feisty and comes on a bit strong at first,” says Nora, a longtime friend of Chyler Leigh (Lexie). “But she’s a good doctor who cares a lot about the patients, especially with the merger getting in the way of that. Everyone is in competition and worried about getting fired, so there’s a lot of fighting with Izzie, Alex and Cristina for the best surgeries.” As for a romance with Alex, Nora will only say, “Perhaps.”
Dr. Charles Percy (Robert Baker) “He’s a general surgeon who has a problem keeping his mouth shut,” says Robert, who has shot scenes with Bailey, Alex and Derek. “In my first episode, some complications arise between Charles and Izzie, causing some head-butting. And then some things happen that the fans will definitely want to see.” Hmmm…could these characters be sharing more than scalpels? “Izzie’s a married woman, but never say never.”
Dr. April Kepner (Sarah Drew) “April’s supereager, a little insecure, passive-aggressive and tries to undermine Lexie,” says Sarah, who has “really enjoyed playing a bitch.” But April also has a sensitive side. “You’ll see her writing some surprising things in her journal.”

Or perhaps because of George’s (TR Knight) death that Grey’s Anatomy
packed a wallop on its premiere last week. Despite being long advertised (and celebrated or rued, depending on which side you belong), the death of one of the original Seattle Grace interns was still anticipated and watched by a lot of people - 17.1 million in the first hour, and somehow dwindling by some 600,000 in the second.
While I think there might be Grey’s Anatomy
fans who purposely tuned in just for the first hour to probably see how they bury and say goodbye to George, overall, the number may be too small to account for people who thought the first hour sucked and therefore tuned out. I personally think the second hour was far better than the first. “Good mourning” - the first of the two-hour kick-off - was slow-cooking, perhaps too slow-cooking, and was much more subdued than what I expected they’d do with George’s funeral scene.
Did the Grey’s season 6 premiere disappoint? On one hand, the bar was set pretty high because of the amazing finale last season. On the other hand, it was not really as shabby as some critics point out.
I’m slightly on the fence on how I felt about the highlight (and probably only memorable part) of the funeral sequence - the very creepy busting into laughs. While I thought it was highly plausible because it’s true that we all demonstrate grief in unique ways, it was just downright bizarre - especially the way Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) laughed. But the bottom line was, it was unexpected, and that alone deserved credit.
On a final note, maybe it’s safe to say that Grey’s Anatomy is back, following the lull it experienced toward the end of last season before the finale (read: ghost sex). Is it a shame that it took a death of a character for it to get its groove back? That, I’m not sure. But I am glad it’s back - and it trumped CSI
by some 1.4 mil viewers. Awesome.

Just a couple of days before the big 2 hour season 6 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo and husband Chris Ivery enjoyed an even bigger premiere; the birth of their first child, a daughter. Stella Luna Pompeo Ivery was born Tuesday September 15th according to Pompeo’s representative.

Stella’s birth means that Ellen will be taking some time off from Grey’s Anatomy and the titular role of Meredith Grey for maternity leave. She’ll be joining co-star Katherine Heigl on maternity leave. Heigl and her husband Joshua Kelley just adopted a child from South Korea, who they’ve named Naleigh. As two of the shows leading ladies step away for family time, the show will focus more on character-centric episodes and the forthcoming merger of Seattle Grace and Mercy West.
Congrats to both Ellen and Katherine!

The first three episodes of Grey’s Anatomy’s sixth season have officially been shot, and original cast member James Pickens, Jr., says he is pleased with what looks to be an interesting season coming up for his character, Dr. Richard Webber (a.k.a. the Chief).
“He has to do a lot of soul-searching to do and has to make some decisions that might change the direction of hospital and/or his life,” the actor told TV Guide. “It is going to have the interns and residents on pins and needles, because they don’t know where their careers are going to go from here.”
“When we left off last season, the hospital was struggling. It had lost its good rating, and [the Chief] spent a good part of the season trying to woo new doctors, getting fancy new machines, and accepting headline-grabbing surgeries,” adds Pickens. “Seattle Grace hospital is his baby, and we know that he’ll do whatever to get that rating back up. Some of his methods will be conventional and some not so conventional. We will see that continue to play out over the course of this season.”
Like everyone else on staff, James Pickens, Jr., echoed previous statements when he explained that the Chief will be greatly affected by George O’Malley’s passing. “The atmosphere has been a little heavy, somber, because they lost one of their own,” Pickens said. “His death affects each member of the staff differently. Everyone feels responsible in some way. In typical Chief style, he will try to hold the place together and keep a stiff upper lip, but it affects him quite deeply.”
