Katherine Heigl may be totally kidding when she complained about the 17-hour day she spent on the set of Grey’s Anatomy during her visit on the Late Show with David Letterman but not everyone found her remark funny.
“Our first day back was Wednesday and it was — I’m going to keep saying this because I hope it embarrasses them — a 17-hour day,” Heigl told David Letterman last Monday, “which I think is cruel and mean.”
Evidently, some sources told Emmy-winning TV writer and casual blogger Ken Levine that the
Grey’s Anatomy actress was to blame for the 17-hour day in question.
“Poor Katherine Heigl. What she neglected to add was this: This ‘cruel’ shooting schedule was only to accommodate HER and her needs. The producers graciously shuffled things around so she could go off and do promotion for her new film. Also, with union rules, the producers had to pay a ton of overtime and penalties to make this happen. The thanks they get is Katherine Heigl going on national television hoping to embarrass them,”
As we all know, Heigl stars in the romantic comedy film The Ugly Truth, which was released in theaters on July 24. Consequently, she went on to promote her new movie but kept bringing up the 17-hour day she spent on the ABC medical drama during her press tour.
While Heigl has yet to comment on what really caused the painstaking work day, rumors of her turning from America’s sweetheart to Hollywood’s most difficult diva have already surfaced previously. According to the New York Daily News, the Grey’s Anatomy actress has sparked all kinds of rumors on the set of her latest movie, Five Killers, for allegedly demanding a series of requests, including insisting on flying via private plane to the film’s international locations and having crazy amounts of security.

Week after week, there’s a juicy story that surfaces the internet regarding
Grey’s Anatomy’s most controversial players. First, series creator Shonda Rhimes revealed that George wasn’t supposed to be Izzie’s heavenly escort. Rhimes also said that she’s now weighing her options on how to make the medical drama work if and when the entire cast eventually leaves the show. Then T.R. Knight broke his silence on why he really left the ABC series. Now, Rhimes talks to Entertainment Weekly about the “lost” George episode that fans will never see.
After seeing last season’s finale (and after learning that Knight has officially left Grey’s Anatomy), the season 6 opener is becoming more and more obvious: George will succumb to the injuries he sustained after getting mowed down by a bus. According to Rhimes, however, that wasn’t supposed to be the last viewers saw of him. Instead, the episode was intended to flash back to the time during which George was missing, from when he left the hospital to when he returned later on as a disfigured John Doe.
“I wanted to see his last day [alive] really badly. What I thought was interesting was the idea of, we now know it’s the last day of someone’s life, [so we're] looking at it differently than [we] would any other time,” Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly.
In what should have been George’s last episode on Grey’s Anatomy, fans would have also seen how George’s split-second decision to save that girl’s life cost him his own
“I wanted to see the moment he leapt in front of the bus,” Rhimes explained. “I wanted to bookend the episode [so that] the first time you see him leap in front of the bus, it’s really scary. But the second time you see it, he’s a hero.”
“I thought it would have been a beautiful episode,” she continued, adding that, had viewers seen those missing hours, “We might have learned something new about George.”
Unfortunately though understandably, Knight declined Rhimes’ request to briefly return in season 6 to give his character some closure.
“I kind of get it,” Rhimes said. “[He'd] emotionally walked away.”

Should Ellen Pompeo find it too consuming being a first time mother, Shonda Rhimes will be well-prepared for a story without her character on “Grey’s Anatomy“. Ellen is seven months pregnant and the sixth season production has just been kicked off, thus Shonda is making some selections of story lines to anticipate the actress’ absence during maternity leave.
“It’s going to be tricky,” Shonda told EW. “Ellen is incredibly optimistic and somehow thinks she’ll be back and ready to rock ‘n’ roll. [But] I have a child, so I know that that’s not true. [So] we have a lovely story [on deck] that will take us into her maternity leave. And we have plans for some really interesting stand-alone episodes for [while she's gone].”

Shonda continued explaining that the sixth season will be the key season that will have to be ready when a character or two are gone. The creator said, “So we’re looking at, How do we mess with that structure now while we have everybody and figure out ways in which, ‘What would we do without Ellen? What would we do if we had an episode without Patrick Dempsey?’ So season 6 is important. A lot of shows don’t make it through season 6 because they don’t know how to transition.”
Still, Shonda admitted that she has not figured out how the show will go on without Meredith Grey, which is the centerpiece of the whole show. “I haven’t even thought that far. That’s the one blank spot I have in my head,” she said, adding that at least there is another Grey, Lexie.
The production of the sixth season began on Wednesday, July 15. Katherine Heigl revealed in an interview with David Letterman that it was 17 hours of work and that it was “weird” without T.R. Knight on the set. The actor has asked to be released from his contract due to lack of screen time and unfavorable creative direction of his character.

With Katherine Heigl returning to the cast, does that mean Izzie’s cancer is in remission? Or not? She may not be out of the woods just yet when the new season begins. Looks like Grey’s Anatomy is currently casting an oncology resident for Season Six. Make of that what you will, but it doesn’t look like Izzie’s recovery is imminent.
Then again, if the new season picks up right where the fifth left off in May’s cliffhanger, it would make sense that she isn’t miraculously cured in minutes. Right?

Katherine Heigl is officially back for another round of “Grey’s Anatomy“, and she has spilled the bean on her first day of shooting the latest season for the ABC’s medical drama. In an interview for her upcoming comedy film “The Ugly Truth”, the 30-year-old confessed to Movies Online how it feels like going back at work without T.R. Knight.

[SPOILER ALERT!] Stating that nothing has changed except for the absent of Knight and Ellen Pompeo’s growing belly, the Izzie Stevens depicter opened up about filming a scene on George O’Malley’s death. “We had to do a scene about George’s death and Justin Chambers kept saying, ‘I just keep imagining T.R. on Broadway while we’re mourning the character’s death’,” she recalled.
“Then we all sort of went, ‘Yeah, that’s hilarious. No, that’s really sad. He would be laughing really hard now too, and he’s not here to laugh with us’,” she furthermore added. “So, it’s a little strange, in that regard, but other than that, it’s good to be back with my friends and my family.”
After weeks of uncertainty because her character was seen having a flatline in the season 5 finale, in mid-June it has been confirmed that Katherine Heigl will be back for the series. The announcement of her return came out hours following ABC’s statement of T.R. Knight’s exit. Although the network declined to release a statement on Heigl’s return, it was reported that the “Knocked Up” actress has signed a contract for the sixth season.

As the sixth season of Grey’s Anatomy draws (slowly) closer, the question of how the show is going to work around star Ellen Pompeo’s maternity leave lingers. E! Online says in its spoiler Q&A today that in regards to another ABC show, the network didn’t want Rachel Griffiths (who gave birth to her third child June 21) to skip any Brothers & Sisters episodes. Production was thus pushed back a week to accommodate her.

What does that mean for Grey’s Anatomy? Well, if you assume ABC does not want an Ellen Pompeo-less Grey’s Anatomy, they may seek a similar situation - however, she is due this fall, so pushing back production may not work.
Solution? Up in the air. But one possible scenario is that when Ellen Pompeo gets back, they shoot a number of Dr. Meredith Grey scenes in succession, and then work overtime to slot her scenes into the episodes that were shot/produced before her return.
Therefore, the audience gets the full Meredith experience with no gaps. Sound workable to you? Or would you rather she just take time off - or be pregnant on the show as well?

Picture the doctors of Grey’s Anatomy. Replace their scrubs with an astronaut helmet; the operating room with a space station; and - presto! - you’ve got Defying Gravity!
The series revolves around eight astronauts, from five countries, that go on a mysterious six-year mission. The 13-episode adventure - which began filming in January in Vancouver - was pitched to ABC as “Grey’s Anatomy in space.”

And it worked: the network has picked up the show and will likely air it this summer. “Since we originally pitched [Defying Gravity] to the international marketplace as Grey’s Anatomy in space, getting the series on the network that has Grey’s and makes the most successful sci-fi show on TV in Lost is a good fit,” said David Madden, the executive VP of Canadian network FtvS. Ron Livingston (pictured) will headline Defying Gravity, along with Laura Harris, Christina Cox, Malik Yoba and Florentine Lahme.

I can now confirm what I first (strongly) hinted at two weeks ago: T.R. Knight is headed to the Great White Way!
The ex-Grey’s Anatomy thesp, who earlier this month confirmed that he was leaving the ABC drama, has signed on to star in the upcoming Broadway revival of Lend Me a Tenor.
Knight will play the role of Max in the classic farce, which is being directed by Stanley Tucci and is scheduled to open in February 2010. Additional casting will be announced in the coming weeks.
Prior to Tenor, Knight will headline a production of Jason Robert Brown’s Tony-winning Parade at Los Angeles’ Mark Taper Forum.

T.R. Knight may have left his role as Dr. George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy but, at least, fans can still catch him when he heads back to his theatrical roots. The 36-year-old actor will be headlining the upcoming musical production of Parade at L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Based on the true story of Leo Frank, who was convicted for the murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan in Atlanta in 1913, Parade revolves around the press frenzy and public outrage about Frank’s trial, and his wife’s crusade for justice. The musical, which won two Tonys after debuting on Broadway in 1998, explores love and hope against all the odds in the middle of religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension.
The Grey’s Anatomy actor will star as Leo Frank and will begin rehearsals in mid-August. Rob Ashford, who directed and choreographed the show at London’s Donmar Warehouse in 2007, will helm the L.A. production, which will run from September 24 to November 15.
“I am very fortunate to return to the theater playing Leo Frank in this incredible, acclaimed production of Parade,” Knight told the Los Angeles Times. “After a five-year break, it feels great to be on stage again.”
Meanwhile, Knight’s costars in Parade have not yet been announced.
Knight is no stranger to the world of theater. He started his career at the Guthrie Theatre where he portrayed Tiny Tim at age five in A Christmas Carol and later appeared in Ah, Wilderness! and Amadeus. He then appeared opposite Patti LuPone in a 2001 Broadway revival of Noises Off, and in the 2003 production of Tartuffe. His last New York stage gig was in 2004, in the off-Broadway drama Boy.
